Lake Columbia is a 378‑acre warm‑water lake created as a cooling pond for Alliant Energy’s 1\,100‑megawatt plant. Water drawn from the Wisconsin River becomes superheated during the cooling process and is released into the lake — keeping it surprisingly warm year‑round. In winter\, temps near the plant can reach 70°\, and in summer they can exceed 100°.This warm water meeting cold air creates a surreal landscape: rolling fog\, frost‑covered trees\, ice‑crusted grasses\, and shimmering hoar frost on everything from fences to rocks.
