🚣🛶 Warm‑Water Winter Paddle at Lake Columbia

April 11 @ 12:00 pm 2:00 pm

Join us for a bucket‑list paddle on one of Wisconsin’s most unique winter waters. Lake Columbia is a 378‑acre warm‑water lake created as a cooling pond for Alliant Energy’s 1,100‑megawatt plant. Water drawn from the Wisconsin River becomes superheated during the cooling process and is released into the lake — keeping it surprisingly warm year‑round. In winter, temps near the plant can reach 70°, and in summer they can exceed 100°.
This warm water meeting cold air creates a surreal landscape: rolling fog, frost‑covered trees, ice‑crusted grasses, and shimmering hoar frost on everything from fences to rocks. It’s a photographer’s dream and a great place to spot eagles.
What to Expect:
* Out‑and‑back paddle; choose your route based on conditions
* Lake is ~1.75 miles long and under 0.5 miles wide
* A narrow dike runs almost the full length of the lake
* Ideal conditions: sunny, calm day
What to Bring:
* Kayak or paddleboard or canoe
* PFD (required)
* Dry bag, warm layers, and winter paddling gear
* Camera or phone for photos
* Water & snacks
* Lunch on your own afterwards
Please RSVP at shawanopaddlers@gmail.com, thank you!
