Cats had their day.

The reptiles got theirs.

Today we’re celebrating the family members who are colorful, clever, occasionally cuddly…

and perfectly capable of OUT-YELLING THE ENTIRE HOUSE. 😂

It’s Pet Bird Day! 🐦❤️

🦜 BIRDS ARE PRETTY INCREDIBLE PETS.

Depending on the species, pet birds can learn sounds, solve puzzles, recognize routines and form incredibly strong bonds with their humans.

And some parrots can even learn to imitate human speech.

Which sounds adorable…

until your bird learns something you REALLY wish it hadn’t. 😳😂

🐦 DID YOU KNOW?

🦜 Parrots use their feet almost like hands to grab and manipulate things — including their food.

💤 Many birds need a consistent routine and plenty of uninterrupted sleep.

🧩 Intelligent bird species need enrichment and things to DO. Toys, foraging opportunities, interaction and safe exploration help keep those busy bird brains occupied.

❤️ And depending on the species, bringing home a bird can be a VERY long commitment.

Some parrots can live for decades.

Meaning that adorable feathered friend isn’t necessarily a “the kids wanted a pet” decision.

It can be a significant part of your family for many, many years.

🐦 AND ABOUT THAT BIRD CAGE…

A pet bird isn’t meant to simply sit in a small cage looking pretty.

Different species have very different needs for space, diet, social interaction, enrichment and veterinary care.

So, just like we talked about on Iguana Awareness Day:

Research BEFORE bringing home the pet. ❤️

Know how big they’ll get.

Know what they’ll eat.

Know how much attention they need.

Know how long they may live.

And perhaps most importantly…

Know how LOUD they can be. 😂
