September 13 is Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day!

Parents…

We have good news and bad news.

The good news?

You don’t have to make dinner. 🎉

The bad news?

Have you SEEN the kitchen after kids cook?! 😂

Today is Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day, and we’re handing over the aprons, mixing bowls and spatulas to the next generation.

(Adult supervision strongly recommended. Your results — and number of dirty dishes — may vary. 😂)

🍳 LET THEM DO IT!

Even little kids can help in the kitchen.

👶 Littlest Chefs:
Wash fruits and veggies, tear lettuce, stir ingredients, sprinkle cheese or arrange food on a plate.

🧒 Growing Chefs:
Measure ingredients, crack eggs, make sandwiches, assemble pizzas, mix batter or help follow a simple recipe.

👩‍🍳 Bigger Kids & Teens:
Give them the menu.

Let them choose a recipe, check what you already have, make an ingredient list and help prepare the meal.

And yes…

“Can we just make frozen pizza?” is technically meal planning. 😂

🌽 BONUS CHALLENGE: MAKE IT LOCAL!

Before the kids take over the kitchen, take them on a little ingredient hunt.

Check a local Farmers Market or Farm Stand — or use our Farm Stand Guide to find someplace new!

Depending on what’s available, they might find:

🌽 Sweet corn
🍅 Tomatoes
🥕 Fresh vegetables
🥚 Farm-fresh eggs
🍎 Fruit
🥩 Local meat
🍯 Honey
🥖 Baked goodies

Then give them a challenge:

Pick ONE local ingredient and figure out what we’re making with it.

Suddenly dinner becomes a scavenger hunt AND a cooking lesson. ❤️

🍕 Make-your-own pizzas
🌮 Tacos
🥞 Breakfast for dinner
🥪 Crazy sandwiches
🍝 Pasta
🍳 Omelets or scrambled eggs

🍎 Fruit parfaits for dessert
🧑‍🌾 Ask that Farm Stand Worker for suggestions

This isn’t about producing a five-star meal.

It’s about letting kids learn how food gets from ingredients → kitchen → table.

They practice measuring.

Reading.

Following directions.

Problem-solving.

Cleaning up.

Wait…

CLEANING UP.

Parents, I almost forgot the most important part of today’s educational experience.

🧽 THE KITCHEN ISN’T DONE UNTIL THE KITCHEN IS CLEAN.

We don’t make the rules.

Actually, today we absolutely DO make that rule. 😂
