August 29 is National Chop Suey Day!

Apparently today’s calendar says we have an excellent excuse to answer the dreaded question…

“What are we having for dinner?” 😂

🍜 A little Chop Suey history:
Chop suey is generally considered a Chinese-American dish, becoming wildly popular in the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There are plenty of legends about exactly who invented it, but its roots are tied to Chinese immigrants adapting their cooking to the ingredients and customers they found here.

And the name? It comes from the Cantonese “tsap seui,” roughly meaning “miscellaneous leftovers” or “mixed bits.”

Which means somebody basically turned “What do we have in the fridge?” into a famous dish.

Honestly, parents have been cooking chop suey without knowing it for YEARS. 😂

🥕 Make-Your-Own Chop Suey Night!

The beauty of chop suey is that you don’t need one perfect recipe. Start with:

🥩 Chicken, pork, beef, shrimp — or skip the meat
🥦 Whatever vegetables need to be used up: celery, onion, carrots, peppers, mushrooms, cabbage, broccoli, bean sprouts…
🥣 A simple savory sauce
🍚 Rice or noodles

Cook your protein, toss in the vegetables, add your sauce and serve it over rice. Dinner AND a refrigerator clean-out. That’s a win.

👩‍🍳 Easy Sauce Idea:
Mix together soy sauce, a little broth or water, a touch of sugar, and cornstarch to thicken it. Add garlic or ginger if you’ve got it!
