September 14 is Gobstopper Day!

Today’s holiday is going to take a while to celebrate…

It’s Gobstopper Day! 😂

First things first:

🍬 WHAT EXACTLY IS A GOBSTOPPER?

Here in the U.S., we’re more likely to call them jawbreakers — those super-hard, round candies that seem to last FOREVER.

The name “gobstopper” comes from British slang:

“Gob” = mouth.

So basically…

It’s a mouth-stopper.

Suddenly “Gobstopper” sounds a little less magical. 😂

🍭 HOW DO THEY GET ALL THOSE LAYERS?

Jawbreakers aren’t usually made in one solid piece.

Candy makers build them up layer after layer, repeatedly coating a center with sugar until the candy gets bigger and bigger.

That’s why, if you’ve ever patiently worked your way through one, you’ll often discover different colors — and sometimes different flavors — as you go.

And YES…

Patience is important.

They’re called jawbreakers.

Not “Let’s See If My Dentist Has an Opening Tomorrow” candies. 😬😂

📚 AND THEN CAME WILLY WONKA…

Author Roald Dahl took the idea to another level in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with the fictional Everlasting Gobstopper — a candy designed to never get smaller no matter how long you sucked on it.

Which raises an important question:

If an ACTUAL Everlasting Gobstopper existed…

Would you want one?! 🤔

Because that sounds amazing for approximately the first three hours.

After Day 6, I’m going to have questions. 😂

🍬 TODAY’S FAMILY FUN: THE CANDY LAYER EXPERIMENT!

If you’ve got a jawbreaker or other colorful hard candy, try a little experiment.

Put it in a shallow dish of warm water and WATCH.

As the outer candy coating dissolves, you may be able to see the different colors and layers appear.
