Today is International Sudoku Day!

And there’s actually a clever reason we celebrate it on September 9 — 9/9.

🔢 A standard Sudoku puzzle has a 9 × 9 grid, divided into nine smaller 3 × 3 boxes.

The goal?

Fill the grid with the numbers 1 through 9 so that each number appears only once in every:

➡️ Row
⬇️ Column
🔲 3 × 3 box

And despite all those numbers…

🤯 Sudoku isn’t really a math game!

You don’t need to add, subtract, multiply or divide anything.

It’s a logic puzzle.

Technically, you could replace 1–9 with nine different symbols and play the exact same game.

So if you just had a flashback to high school algebra…

You can come back now. You’re safe. 😂

🧩 A LITTLE SUDOKU HISTORY

The puzzle we recognize today has roots in earlier number-placement puzzles, but modern Sudoku really took off after appearing in Japanese puzzle publications during the 1980s.

The name comes from a shortened Japanese phrase referring to the idea that the numbers must be single — or appear only once.

Eventually Sudoku exploded in popularity around the world, showing up in newspapers, puzzle books and apps everywhere.

Start with an easy one.

For younger kids, look for 4 × 4 beginner Sudoku puzzles — or versions that use pictures, animals, shapes or colors instead of numbers.

Then make it a family competition:

⏱️ Who can beat yesterday’s time?
🧠 Kids vs. grown-ups?
☕ Can Mom finish hers before the coffee gets cold?
