Today we’re celebrating something we don’t exactly have on every street corner. 😂

It’s Skyscraper Day!

Around here, we’re a little more accustomed to looking up at…

🌽 Grain silos
🌲 Really tall trees
⛪ Church steeples
💧 Water towers
📡 And the occasional VERY ambitious antenna

But today we’re looking WAY up! 🏙️

🏗️ HOW DID SKYSCRAPERS BECOME POSSIBLE?

For centuries, there was a pretty big problem with building taller and taller buildings:

The walls had to support all that weight.

Then, in the late 1800s, builders began using metal structural frames that could carry the building’s weight instead.

Combine that with another pretty important invention — the safety elevator — and suddenly building UP became much more practical.

🏙️ One of the buildings commonly called the world’s first skyscraper was Chicago’s Home Insurance Building, completed in 1885.

It was…

10 stories tall.

Not exactly jaw-dropping by today’s standards, but at the time it was a BIG deal.

Today, the world’s tallest skyscrapers stretch well over 100 stories into the sky.

Grab whatever you’ve got around the house:

🧱 LEGO or blocks
🥤 Plastic cups
📦 Empty boxes
🃏 Playing cards
🥫 Cans
🍝 Even dry spaghetti + marshmallows!

Then see who can build the TALLEST freestanding tower.

But here’s the rule:

🚫 Nobody gets to hold it up!

Measure your creations before gravity inevitably wins. 😂
