Monday, September 7 is Superhuman Day!

When you hear Superhuman Day, you might picture capes, flying and somebody lifting a car with one hand. 🦸

But today’s meaning is much better than that.

❤️ Superhuman Day celebrates people with disabilities and the incredible things they accomplish while challenging the assumptions and barriers placed in their way.

The observance began in 2016 with a campaign connected to the Rio Paralympic Games, highlighting athletes and other people with disabilities for their talent, determination and achievements.

And there’s an important distinction:

Being “superhuman” isn’t about pretending disabilities or barriers don’t exist.

It’s about recognizing ability instead of automatically assuming inability.

♿ An athlete competing at an elite level.

🎨 An artist creating something incredible.

🎓 A student finding a different way to learn.

💼 A business owner building something from the ground up.

🎵 A musician performing.

🏡 A neighbor contributing to their community.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn’t what a person can or cannot do.

It’s someone else deciding what they’re capable of before giving them the opportunity to show us.

💪 TODAY’S FAMILY CONVERSATION:

Ask the kids:

What does it mean to be capable?

Talk about how people may accomplish the same task in completely different ways.

Different doesn’t automatically mean less.

❤️ And maybe today’s challenge isn’t to do anything at all.

Maybe it’s simply to notice.

Notice accessibility.

Notice barriers.

Notice when we’re making assumptions.

And notice the amazing people around us who are doing things their own way every single day.
